| John Harrelson Teaching Award | |  |
Every year, the junior residents vote to select a graduating chief resident who contributed the most to their early orthopedic and medical education. In June 2019, the John Harrelson Teaching Award was awarded to Nathan “Nate” Grimm. Nate was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Boise State University and then continuing his medical education at the University of Utah Medical School. He excelled as a researcher very early in his career and chose to pursue his orthopedic residency training at Duke University, strengthening the legacy of Duke Orthopaedics. Nate possesses the qualities necessary to excel in Duke Orthopaedics, including a passion for teamwork, unrelenting work ethic, integrity, and professionalism. Nate brought an unmatched enthusiasm to work and when he was not teaching junior residents under him, he was making them laugh with his characteristic wit. Nate's co-residents benefited daily from his dedication to residency education and teaching. Nate is completing his fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Connecticut. We all look forward to the accomplishments that Nate will make in the field of orthopedics in the years to come.

The chief resident class annually selects a third-year resident who they feel best exemplifies the qualities embodied by William Ogden, Jr. In June 2019, Alex Lazarides was awarded this special honor. Alex Lazarides grew up in La Jolla, CA and first arrived at Duke as an undergraduate. Durham quickly became a second home for him as he continued at Duke for medical school and then residency. As a “triple Dukie,” the Duke blue is engrained in Alex and he is an integral part of The Duke Orthopaedic Residency family. Alex is an exceptional leader and has a constant drive to better himself and his fellow residents. He possesses the intangibles that were important to Ogden and necessary to excel in orthopedic residency, including passion, teamwork, work ethic, integrity, and professionalism. Alex is pursuing a career in orthopaedic oncology and we are excited to see him develop into a leader in this field.
